Visit Prescriptions - Overview

Within a visit record users can prescribe and dispense medications to client.

SpecVet makes a distinction between "Prescribing Medications",  "Prescription Method" and "Dispensing Medications" to better manage and track medication use.  

A prescription is the formal authorization by medical staff for a patient to begin a certain medications.   Once a prescription is made it can be dispensed with in the hospital, sent to an outside pharmacy or given to a client.    Dispensing medication can occur against a new prescription or can occur against previous prescriptions with valid refills.

Within a visit record users can prescribe and dispense medications to client.

Depending on the prescription method different actions occur with in SpecVet.

Prescription Method:
Dispense:

  1. prints an in-house label
  2. adds a charge to the open invoice
  3. adds the details to the discharge instructions
  4. classifies Rx as "Dispensed"

Prescribe to client:

  1. prints an a prescription form which veterinarian signs off on
  2. DOES NOT add a charge to the open invoice
  3. adds the details to the discharge instructions
  4. classifies Rx as  "Prescribed to Client"

Prescribe to Pharmacy:

  1. prints an a prescription form which veterinarian signs off on
  2. DOES NOT add a charge to the open invoice
  3. adds the details to the discharge instructions
  4. classifies Rx as "Prescribed to Pharmacy

There are 5 sub tabs within the prescription window.

Visit Rx's - shows only the prescriptions from this particular visit

Active Rx's - shows only the "active prescriptions".  Patients with a long medical history or complex medical history can have a large number of prescriptions.   The active window only shows those medications that have been recently prescribed or refilled. The time frame a prescription is considered active can be managed in site settings.

All Rx's - Shows all prescriptions for this patient

Dispensing History - shows the actual dispenses against all previous prescriptions

Pt Interactions - a text field where staff can add drug  allergies/intolerances or prescriptions preferences.  An "Rx" flag will be displayed in all patient and visit records.
